WHAT IS YOGA?
Yoga, meaning ‘union’, developed in India and recognises the link between body, mind and the breath. In a yoga class you will perform a number of postures, called asanas, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques.
Just some of the myriad of benefits of yoga are:
- Our bodies become stronger, healthier and more flexible. Many people experience a significant decrease in back, neck and shoulder pain.
- People with medical conditions like high blood pressure, circulatory problems, obesity or depression, find that yoga helps in managing these.
- Many people find themselves spontaneously leading healthier lifestyles: cutting down on bad habits like drinking too much and smoking, choosing healthier food and drinking more water.
- We can find it easier to put everyday problems in perspective, making us feel calmer and better able to cope with stress.
- With regular practice, we become calmer and more focused, making us more productive in our work.
- Learning relaxation and breathing techniques can improve sleep.
- Many people find that regular practice helps them become more centred and happier, which improves their relationships and helps them to enjoy life more fully.
